Senior Vice President / General Manager, Service Provider Routing Technology Group Cisco Systems, Inc.

Tony Bates is Senior Vice President of Cisco Systems’ Service Provider Routing Technology Group (SPR TG).  He is a member of CEO John Chambers’ senior staff, and contributes to Cisco’s overall strategy and direction. 

Tony leads Cisco Systems’ single largest revenue-generating organization.  The SPR TG is comprised of 5 business units:  Core Routing BU; Edge Routing BU; Mid-range Routing BU; Services Routing BU; Access/Aggregation BU, and SPR Software TG, Advanced Routing TG, and Architecture TG. 

He was promoted to Vice President and General Manager of Cisco’s high-end router business in July 2000.  He was responsible for strategy and execution for Cisco’s High End Router (CRS-1 and the Cisco 12000) and Multi-Service WAN (MGX) product lines.

Tony joined Cisco in 1996.  His other positions have included Director of Marketing for the Optical Internetworking business; Manager of Engineering for Internet POP Systems (IPSBU); and Technical Leader in the Office of the Chief Technology Officer.

Before joining Cisco, he drove the backbone-engineering strategy for Internet MCI (MCI’s national IP backbone).  He has more than19 years of experience in the telecommunications and Internet industries.

Tony has published 12 IETF RFCs in the areas of Internet Routing and Operations and holds 8 patents in the area of layer 2 and layer 3 innovations.
